War Dialing

Test the Security of Your Carrier-Connected Devices

Organizations often overlook the more mundane elements of their networks, such as faxes and modems. These items are vulnerable to one of the oldest attack techniques: automated phone dialing (commonly called “war dialing”). You may be unaware of legacy fax and modem devices across your organization that could be accessed by malicious automated phone dialing systems. Testing for vulnerabilities can be complex and time consuming.

Dell SecureWorks’ War Dialing service probes the simplest of network devices, your faxes and modems, which are accessible through traditional telephone carrier connections and are vulnerable to phone auto-dialer attacks. Mimicking real-world auto-dialer threats, the service identifies, gathers information, and tests your modem and fax devices for security vulnerabilities.

The War Dialing service helps you:

Understand your risk exposure from an automated dialing attack

Dell SecureWorks’ War Dialing service assesses your risk by performing systemized testing of your connected devices through traditional phone lines. The service dials publicly accessible direct-dial telephone numbers for the purposes of identifying your carrier devices, such as faxes and modems, and using information from those devices to attempt to penetrate your security defenses.

The service performs three key functions:

  • Connects: Performs calls across your organization’s phone systems
  • Identifies: Identifies active phone, fax and modem numbers, and device details
  • Probes: Leverages collected information to attempt to penetrate your systems
  • Improve the security of devices connected to your carrier network

Dell SecureWorks’ War Dialing service is designed to identify and determine the security of your fax machines, modems and other devices connected to traditional phone lines. Because many organizations lose track of these assets across their offices and locations, the War Dialing service can be an effective mechanism to understand what fax machines and devices are connected, and whether they are secure.

Identify previously unknown faxes and modems

Changing offices, employees and organizations raise the probability that there may be connected devices that IT isn't aware of. These devices' "invisibility" may make the networks they connect to surprisingly at risk of compromise.

Dell SecureWorks' War Dialing service can be an effective way to identify fax machine and modems connected to your carrier network that may have been long forgotten. The service looks for devices that were previously unknown, and tests to determine if they are secure.
